Background: Dr. Kevin Smith, O.D. specializes in geriatric eye care. He is a therapeutic Optometrist with experience in assisted living, skilled nursing, and home health eye care.   Importance of Eye Exams: Optometrists are considered the primary care doctors of eye care and are licensed to diagnose and treat many eye conditionsas well as detecting many systemic conditions like:
Hypertension, Diabetes, HIV, CMV, MS, Lupus, CVA, Lyme Disease, Cancer and others.  Early diagnosis is crucial to long term visual health.

How Exams work:  Doctor will schedule a time to administer exams to any resident that signs up with the facility or shows up the day of exams. All exams will be conducted with handheld portable equipment. Vision is checked and a new prescription for glasses can be prescribed. Eye health is also checked for allergies, dry eyes, infections, cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and systemic conditions that affect the eye. In addition to this muscle function is monitored. Pupil and gross visual fields are done to check neurological function. If there is an abnormal finding during testing a referral to a specialist can be made by Dr. Smith.

Follow Up After Exam:  After day of exams another day will be set up to bring back glasses and administer any follow up exams if needed. Eyeglasses will be made for all patients seen by Dr. Smith that have accepted insurance. The glasses will be composed of a new frame of the patient’s choice from the selection of frames brought by Dr. Smith. Lenses will be plastic single vision or plastic flat top lined bifocals. Ultraviolet coating will also be applied to all lenses.

Insurance Information: Medicare, Medicaid, Evercare, United, Aetna are some of the plans accepted currently.  Others are added every month.  HMO insurance plans at this time are not accepted.  A written prescription will be given to the patient to fill at an optical approved by the HMO.
